Can I return DS game with no receipt?

My ex mother-in-law bought Pokemon Platinum for DS for my son for Christmas but I had already bought it on-line for him. Upshot is I need to return mother-in-laws copy as mine was already opened. Problem is she is in hospital with lung cancer and I have no hope of getting the receipt or even finding out where she bought it. Any suggestions as to what I can do, GAME only offered £11 trade in. I know the game normally retails at £31.99.
He would take another game either for DS or Wii I am not looking for cash.

I'd try your luck at Tesco or Asda? They usually take things back without receipts if you tell them it was an unwanted present. You may only get store credit but better than nothing.0

You have no statutory right to a refund or exchange (even with a receipt),but certainly no harm in asking. They may be more amenable if you shop regularly at a.n.other store.
If you are prepared to tell a lie, you could try returning it to the on-line retailer where you bought your copy."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I work at GAME, here's my store's policy:
With a receipt and still sealed within 28 days: No problem
With a receipt, not sealed within 3 months: Only exchanged/refunded if faulty
With no receipt, but sealed: Can be returned as a good will gesture but only at the current selling price - NOT the price paid for it. Speak to the manager, we don't have to return here, but we do make exceptions sometimes.
No receipt, not sealed : Trade-in only.0 -
Asda will want a receipt, they changed their policy last September.0
