removing accounts from my credit report

hi

i am really trying to sort my finances this year, and know that there are a few accounts which were last used a few years ago that are still showing on my credit report.

is it worthwhile contacting these companies to close these accounts - my mortgage deal is due for renewal in april and i dont want to jeopoardise my chances of getting a good deal!

any advice appreciated - if it makes any difference the last time i checked my credit report, my score was fair/good

thanks in advance

Accounts will show for 6 years after they're "Settled". If the status of the account is showing as "Settled" it'll show the settled date and will automatically drop off after 6 years. If it's still showing as "Satisfactory" and is basically dormant, then it's best to close these.

  • Hi same topic - I recently check my file for the 1st time - seen a barclycard entry saying it was 5 or more pymnts late (in 2005) limit was £50! I wrote to them asking for a copy of the application as I have never had a barclaycard - they wrot back "After investigation we can confim the entry on your credit file related to an account that was closed some time ago. Unfortunatley this means we are unable to provide a copy of the application form. Please be assured we have removed the entry from your file"

Do they not have a legal obilgation to keep these records? and if the entry has been removed from my file does this mean there is no record of it all - or have I done more damage in querying it?
  • thanks cannyjock

i will take a look at my credit report and see what all needs to be settled

    thanks again
