Toilet seat broke after 1 month

Options
My Husband bought a new toilet seat from B&Q last month. It is a plastic coated wood affair and cost £12.99

We'd had the old one for years and wanted to spruce up the bathroom a bit without spending much money.

This morning it broke. Totally cracked through, about halfway down on one side.

Neither of us are that overweight but I feel a bit embarrassed going back with it. :o

Am I entitled to a replacement or are they likely to say it was our fault?

Thanks.

I would take it back with a recepit, its a month old, without being cheeky (from the Sales of Goods Act) - Its unfit for its purpose.

Just ask for a refund, if they offer an exchange, explain thats it a month old, obviously unfit for purpose, they may offer you the same- if oyu don't want an identical one, put ur foot down and hold out.

becoz of the nature of the item, people just take the 1st option available, Your be fine, your not the 1st, you won't be the last xx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • Thanks for that. Its not something I am looking forward to but, as you say, it should last for longer than 1 month.

No doubt it will be just my luck I'll get a large queue form behind me just as I'm trying to explain, lol.

    Thanks again, much appreciated x

which B&Q are you taking it back too? im always up for a laugh!

Dont be embarrassed, there are far worse things going on in other peoples lives than worrying about taking a toilet seat back because it broke. Its the manufacturers failure and not yours or B&Q's (unless they also manufacture this item) - they will just give you another and send that one back to the manufacturers for an investigation.

There are 'worse things going on' in my life too, doesn't seem to help though - still, maybe I'll 'brighten' somebody's miserable existence for a moment and no, I'm not going to tell you what branch I'm going to ;)

Next step, now, where did he put that receipt..........

B & Q, I'd be surprised if you even need a receipt for an exchange.
  • I doubt they'll want to see a reciept, they're pretty good at B&Q I've found. Best to take the toilet seat back rather than throw the money down the shitter! :D

When i used to work in B&Q we would get back toilet seats all the time. As other said B&Q are quite Lax in their returns policy although they have recently been getting stricter notice if you paid by card they'll be able to find your transaction in back office fairly easily.
  • Thanks all. I have now found the receipt I was blaming my husband for misplacing. :D (whisper, turns out I had it in my bag all the time)

B&Q have been very strict recently, they insist on receipts even for faulty goods (as do Tesco on their electrical goods) they won't even issue you with a credit note these days.

Thanks for the reassurances about toilet seat returns, glad its not just me! (I shall probably still wear a disguise but I'll be the one limping with a pinched leg ;) )

It all cos the kingfisher group made a huge loss in china and now there trying to make money up by getting the European companies to support them and ther doing this mainly though slashing staffing numbers but also there finding other ways of reducing cost such as returns. Which all leads to poor customer service
  • Thanks mankysteve, it does seem a strange way to run a business.....
