    Ok -
you started a job and then felt that the hours were too much.

    So, you changed your contract.

So, they are within their rights to extend your probationary period to account for the change in hours, this it seems is to be 2 months.

So they can continue to extend my probationary period each time it ends with no reason? That seems quite unfair from an employees perpective.

I accept that it would have extended when my new contract commenced, which was an extension of one month. But now that has passed, they have changed it again...

I was under the impression that they have to have reason, but clearly my understanding was wrong.

    Thanks all

Yes, they can, even if they just say they want more time. I'd say that you saying that the hours were too much for you would be enough grounds to insist on more time.

They can even get rid with pretty much no reason whatsoever in the first year.

They should only have an extension for each valid reason (ie contract change) once I think but as most probationary periods are 3 months at a time then as I said I would hold out for this second month and see what is said.

You could raise a grievance but I wouldn't have thought it would be worthwhile
