Not of help to the OP but, and on the other side of the coin, there is a VERY good tool shop in Belfast that I have used for 30+ years, I have used them via the post since I moved from Belfast. 20+ years ago I took some new and specially ordered thread cutting taps back to them as the taps had broken in their first usage. The shop said they have to send them back to the makers as they were a special order, I said fine and then forgot about them. I moved to England shortly thereafter but probably 10 years later I was back in Belfast for a visit and called in to the shop to get something for my dad. As soon as he saw me one of the shop owners said "I have those taps of yours in my office, the original ones were soft" I said "what taps", he said "these ones" I was absolutely stunned!!!!0

Could have been one of the many illnesses that affects the memory, or any type of illness that became so overwhelming that the OP effectively put their day to day affairs on hold until they had fully recovered.
Well done to bingo bango and chattychappy for their sensible and well informed replies.
Which would considerably lower any sentimental value! Common sense answer as ever taxiphil.Gone ... or have I?0 -

It IS Belfast. You must have owed him money, that's what he remembered0 -
hi
I rang the jewellers up and they said they only keep things for 3 months
and then they scrap them?? they said this is stated on the receiptSnakeeyes21 wrote: »from www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_world/consumer_affairs/keeping_lost_found_and_uncollected_goods.htm#selling_uncollected_or_abandoned_goods
Selling uncollected or abandoned goods
If you are in possession of another person’s goods you can sell them if they remain uncollected, as long as:-
the original owner is responsible for collecting the goods. The goods cannot be sold if it is your responsibility to return them; and
any money received from the sale is returned to the original owner or, if this is not possible, kept on account for them. The owner only loses their right to the money after six years; and
you follow the correct procedure.
Procedure for obtaining the right to sell uncollected or abandoned goods
That is very useful information, but the jeweller hasn't specifically said they've sold the bracelet, they've scrapped it.
OP needs to go back andand ask them to clarify exactly what they mean by 'scrapped' before going all guns abalzing to court.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
I do look forward to reading your posts, what wonderful works of complete fiction they are.
But just out of interest, do your replies just come naturally, or do you actually go away and research your replies, just make sure that you are offering complete utter nonsense? because if it is the former, then there is the real possibility that one of these days, completely by accident, you might actually be giving advice that is correct!!!
And I do wonder who on earth thanks him for all the drivel, must be the pixies at the bottom of the trolls garden (that's atop a mountain)0 -
hi
a couple of years ago I took a gold bracelet to a local jewellers to get it
repaired
due to illness I forgot about it until last week when I found the receipt
I rang the jewellers up and they said they only keep things for 3 months
and then they scrap them?? they said this is stated on the receipt
I cant see how this can be legal, they can scrap things and keep the money, and
3 months sounds a very short space of time, it was a bracelet so it is hardly going
to take a lot of storing, This seems to me to be theft. They had my address so it would have taken them a minute to phone me, even if they charged me for the call?
it was a gold bracelet so had some value but it had been given to my mother by my late father so had great sentimental value
anyhow please take this as a warning to be careful if you leave things in jewellers that they dont have the same rules
take care;)

You think, oh, its only a little braclet & why couldnt he phone me?
Well....why dont you multiply his repairs by 20000, and then you see that his very small shop has to find room for 20000 items plus 20,000 telephone calls or letters. Do you expect all jewellers to be mind readers and know that you will eventually come for it?
To be honest with you, it cant have been that special otherwise you would have taken more care with it.
It would be so much easier if you took care of your own property and collected it when it was ready, if you didnt, then thats something you need to learn from. Its very common practice. Jewellry will be scrapped, melted down and got rid of because they just dont have room for all that stuff.
A brand new gold ring at £100 will bring less than a fiver scrap THATS why Jewellers 'scrap' because the worth is much less.0
