Hi,
Received a letter from HMCR saying that from 1st April 2010 I will be on BR tax with no tax free allowance! I am currently on 647L and got about £6.470.00 worth of tax free why is this not been extending this year?

Here is how we worked it out
mine had
personal allowance 6475
then deductions for car benefit, medical insurance and underpayment
re the personal allowance it states:
the tax free amount starts from the "personal allowance" that depends on your circumstances. Our records tell us you are entitled to £6475 for this tax year, the standard allowance for people under 65.
If your breakdown looks incorrect there will be a number you can call them on0 -

It will either be because of benefits in kind or underpaid tax in a previous year0 -
Give them a call to see what's going on!
My wife also recieved one on Friday saying they are putting on BR from April as they say she has a 2nd job! On calling them up to ask where she is now working - their computer is telling them that she also working for the same company she has worked at for the last 6 years!! They apologised for the mistake and said that things like this happen quite a lot and they will revert her tax code back to what it was before!0 -
The best people to ask is the tax office themselves, I'd ring them if I were you. I have my normal tax allowance, and I also have a pension from my late husbands employer. I receive separate notifications regarding my pension, on which I am taxed at BR as my tax code is applied to my employment.0
