Provided you just want a company to have standard memorandum and articles then I have used both company wizard and quickformations and not had problems with either. The only advice I would give is to make sure you get a printed copy of your certificate of incorporation and to also purchase a company register.0

Rolo Tomasi is right. The formations can be made by you, attorneys, specialised companies or accountants. Many attorneys will contract this kind of work out to company formation agents, so it is good to approach these companies directly.0

I've used Companies Made Simple. £29.99 + VAT. Sending you printed certificates etc., are extra, though, but electronic copies are included. A local printer should be able to print it on the right paper for a small charge, unless you have the ability to do it yourself, of course.
The company was on the register at Companies House a day or so after. Quick and easy.

I used Companies Made Simple, but the supplying of the certificate on the 'correct' paper was a ripoff. I can't remember how much it was now, it was over 5 years ago I registered, but it was something like £10 for a single sheet of 170gsm pale yellow paper, (which costs about £10 for 500 sheets in a stationers). The one they sent me was printed wonkily and they didn't even reprint it when I complained. I was expecting it to be some sort of special watermarked paper, but it wasn't.Make £2025 in 2025

That's a good point, I paid an extra £10 to get 5 pieces of paper. As they supplied PDFs I could have printed them out to the same quality for next to nothing.
I really can't see anyone caring what weight the paper is, and if they do you can print them out later professionally from the PDF.0 -
Are you sure you actually need to form a company? Most people start as a sole trader.
If you haven't done so you need to check with an accountant or other person with expertise the best course of action.0 -
This thread has been very helpful to me. I am about to start a business and will be a sole trader first on the advice of people on this forum. However, I want to protect the name to have decided on setting up a dormant company which I may use in the future.
Company Wizard looks simple enough for me, mentioned above, and I have found an accountant who will file the return every year for me.
Thanks all, Ana0 -
Companyformations247.co.uk is the best so far, it's about £18 to incorporate a limited company which is so cheap compared to anywhere else!
Support is second to none aswell, if you make a mistake on your application they will bombard you with phone calls to fix it - making the process quicker and less stressful for you.
During your purchase you get an option to buy a registered office for £20 but if you decide to buy it later it's £50. I was literally upset when I noticed the price difference, you can't get a registered office anywhere on the internet for £20!
Therefore I highly recommend companyformations247.co.uk even better than Companies House itself.0 -
You can do it online directly with Companies House for £15.
If you don't know what your doing then use a formation agent who will guide you in the right direction (most of the time).
Please note that with an off the shelf company you will get standard Articles of Association. This may not suitable for you particular set up so it is wise to seek legal advice to make sure the company is formulated correctly (i.e issues around sole member companies, Share transfers (Jordans A, B or C), etc etc etc.
Cheap will mean nothing when you breach the Companies Act and you get a nice fine for not complying with your obligations. Seek professional advice.0 -

What are the issues around sole member companies? I am planning on being the only director - no secretary.
Also I am bit confused about shares authorised and issued. To set up my dormant company how many should be authorised and how many issued? How do you decide?
Thanks, Ana0
