Magellan Satnav-utterly useless!

I bought a Magellan Satnav at Comet in July last year, since then it has been returned to the factory THREE times, it came back again last week, today, we did a round trip of 240 miles and it never moved from the list of directions!

I am going to take it back to Comet and ask for a complete refund, what do you think is the best way ahead?

I can only tell you what works for me. I already had a Pocket PC (Dell axim x50v) so I got a used bluetooth GPS receiver from ebay (£35 I think) and TomTom navigator 5. It all works a treat and TomTom is well supported.

July last year? thats along time to now decide your not happy with it. so what ever you do you need to be quick about it.

What problems have you had with it?
Document them all incuding dates faults occured, returned for repair, date you received it back and any fault reports from Magellan everything in writing will back up our case for getting an acceptable outcome.

As with most deivces the software locks up and crashes just like your pc and need resetting every so often my PDA based gps does every so often and it normally works again afterwards, I wouldnt have left the thing doing nothing a reset would have been done.

Another thing that may be somthing to keep in mid is that GPS signal's are disrupted by electrical wires, either tram lines above the road or electric heated windscreens play havoc with them. maybe you have a heated windscreen. if you made this clear at the time of buying then it could be a good thing to throw in as it as miss sold if you just bought the unit without any store advice then that isnt an option.

As long as you have given them the chance to provide you with a working unit which I think 3 trips to the makers is enough it clearly isnt sutable for the intended use.

    Thanks for your replies.

I have all the documentation including receipts from Magellan in France.

This episode has been going on from last October, it has been away over four weeks in total.

If I send it back yet again, it will be out of warranty by the time it is retruned, it cost a lot of money hence it is going back to Comet tomorrow, so I will post what happens!

  • Also, you need to be certain you car does not habe an athermic coated windscreen because this will totally block out any signal from the satellites. Try using in another car. Can you get a fix on the unit outside of the car?

If your car has an athermic coating you may need a re-radiating antenna to get the signal through to the unit.

Try having a look on https://www.pocketgpsworld.com a forum dedicated to GPS.

    Best of luck
