I don`t want to pay holiday let prices but I do want to rent something nice in a sunny country most winters, from next year on. I don`t know where to start looking for such a property. I am thinking canaries and the likes. Has anyone done it and could you give me some pointers please

I would have a good read though the accommodation section of the Tenerife Forum.
Also going back through some threads for the previous 6 months... the accommodation wanted / accommodation available. From other parts of the site you get a deeper insight into the score in Tenerife. Tapping local knowledge through their discussions and getting a better understanding from the people who live there.
And perhaps getting a good deal.

I know Lanzarote also has forums, and maybe other forums for the other islands... just giving the Tenerife as an example (and it seems the busiest forum.)0 -
Lanzarote Gazette RENTAL ADS. Just so you have some ideas on prices etc.
When we had an apartment there I wouldn't have been interested in a long term cheaper let in winter as we had no problems holiday lettingto folks wanting to get away from this type of weather. We sold in 05 so things may be different now.
EDITED to add: Was short of time this morning. You may find more choice/better rental prices if consider the areas where resident ex-pats live which is often not in the main resorts. In Lanzarote places like Playa Honda, Tias and Yaiza are very nice, close to resorts, beaches etc but not particularly touristy. I'm sure the other islands have similar towns and villages.0
