Capital One - Please help

OK, so I don't have the "best" credit rating in the world, saw an advertisement for the new capital one card which reduces the interest rate each month and thought I'd give it a whirl.

Applied online and got the message saying we need to look at your application in more depth and will write to you.

A week passed and I got an acceptance letter with 2 credit agreements, one to sign and return and one for my own copy. I thought great. Sent the signed credit agreement back in the prepaid envelope.

2 weeks passed and no card arrived nor did I hear anything. So I thought I best give them a ring in case the card has been lost in the post.

Well, when I rang I was told my application had been declined, they had in fact recieved my signed credit agreement but apparently I had failed the credit check. True to their word a letter then arrived a few days later saying my application had been declined.

When I questioned the customer service why I had recieved an acceptance letter and credit agreement if my application was declined I was told that final credit checks had declined the application. It was def an acceptance letter and not a pre approved letter btw.

I'm a little concerned now as I have signed this credit card agreement and don't know where I stand. How is this going to look on my credit file?

Please help, what can I do about this??
Thanks

It will just show as a search on your file. No more no less

Make sure you check your credit report for a CIFAS entry, my wife applied to cap1, got acceptance online, then declined afterwards, and they kindly added a CIFAS marker on her credit file for no apparent reason in our opinion.

They claim it was application fraud... but wouldnt tell us how they came to that conclusion as all the details she entered were 100% correct.

Subsequently we complained and over the course of 6 weeks they removed the marker but still wouldnt grant the card.

Just keep and eye on your file, i cant say it will happen but it did for us.

    thanks

  • Thanks for replies. I cannot understand why this has happened tbh. How can they accept my application and then decline it after I have signed the credit agreement? I haven't applied for anything else inbetween or anything so really can't understand what's going on.

I think I'll have to get a copy of my credit file and check it.
