Doing porridge

Options
I need some assistance please.

I like porridge for breakfast but not keen on the texture that you get from large oats. Years ago I used to eat a fine oat porridge that gave a smooth texture similar to semolina. I can't remember what brand it was, nor find anything similar in any supermarket or on-line.

Does anyone have any ideas please as to where else I can look ?

Thanks so much - trying to eat healthily as a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic.

Try oatmeal or soaking the oats overnight.

I tried Asda own brand version of ready brek, and a high percentage of it is oat flour, rather than oats so it has quite a fine texture
  • Ready Brek might seem like porridge but it bears an uncanny resemblance to glue. I think the OP is after some finely-ground oatmeal, perhaps it's available in the health-food shop if supermarkets don't stock it or of course a whizz in the food-processor might do it.
  • I think flahavans and Quaker oats are good in betweens. I know the smooth porridge is really nice but I'm guessing with the diabetes issue, the bigger the oats the better since they take longer to digest. These two brands are both not jumbo but not totally smooth either.

I'd go with Oats-so-simple too- I have the opposite problem: I like my porridge chunky! I'd say Oats-so-Simple is the finest you can get, even smoother then supermarkets own brand. But also soaking overnight and adding skimmed milk can help too.

Don't try the Dorsets Oats if your looking for smooth - they are lovely and chunky!

Oat bran. You can get it in H&B or other health shops, it's like dried cous cous in texture, grain size and you make it as you would porridge.

Oat So Simple (plain variety) may be your best bet for a finer consistency...
