Housing Shortage Deniers...... What an apt term.
We seem to have added a few of these to our midst of late, Bernard Shaw, ironically, being the latest proponent of this, well, B.S......
I think it's best to let the Chief Executive of the CEBR explain why prices will rise this year.......

There is a substantial housing supply shortage in the UK now and this will provide a safety net.
Obviously if you are a ‘housing shortage denier’ you will ignore this.
But the track record of commentators who have ignored the supply side in the housing market is atrocious.

Hamish mate. Don't take this the wrong way. You seem like a reasonably happy, intelligent person. You have a job, wife, nice house or two plus kids. That's great. What I don't understand is why this house thing is so important to you?0

I'm sure in late 2007 he like most others were saying the same thing. There is no doubt Hamish that if you allow everyone to get a self cert mortgage and make up there own salary house prices will go through the roof Hamish. The problem is Hamish that there is only so much a bank will lend and there is only so long the government can underpin the housing market. As you have already said the Tories will get in power in June and whilst you dont believe it we all know now there will be big cuts. I can't see SMI's continuing and unlikely DC will be telling the banks they cannot repossess etc.0 -

He doesn't have kids - has stated he doesn't want them.
Collecting material objects like big tellies is his raison d'etre.
HPI = lots of big tellies.
Have I got that right, Hamish?0 -
Yet more third-rate bear baiting. You're going to have to do much better than that if you want to get a bite. :THAMISH_MCTAVISH wrote: »Housing Shortage Deniers0 -
Building of new houses pretty much ground to a halt when prices started to drop and people were afraid to buy. Until very recently I lived in an area where new houses were popping up everywhere and they were snapped up like hotcakes.
Has anyone seen any estimates as to the number of extra houses that WOULD have been built in the UK had prices NOT dropped and people kept buying as normal?
To what degree has the reduction in house prices (and the resulting slowing of the market) added to the housing crisis?
Is it possible that this little crash will ultimately result in even higher HPI? I accept the arguments that if people can't afford to pay prices can't go higher. Yet if demand massively outstrips supply people will go to great lengths to buy - especially with a necessity like housing. It might not be individuals buying but I'm sure there will be plenty of people with cash waiting to buy up a limmited resource that people MUST have.0 -
The problem that the HPC theorists have to face up to is that the UK is small and is a VERY desirable place to live.
Oh and the fact that there are no houses being built.0 -

Yes, this housing shortage is terrible.
That's why I keep tripping over homeless people and there are simply no properties for sale/rent on Rightmove.
Or not...
Do get a grip, dear. Use the evidence of your eyes.0 -
