Win 7 Laptop crashes router when connects?

Problem driving me crazy.
Have just bought a dell laptop with Win 7 (the carphone warehouse deal).
When it connects to my adsl modem/wireless router the router restarts, all lights go off and it cyles through the start up/ sync/connect process. It also kills it when logging off laptop. I can get a stable connection if the laptop is on first and I then restart router.
Router is 3Com Office Connect 3CRWE754G72-A. It is a good few years old and there are no firmware updates available. It works finr with XP Laptop / Xbox / WII etc
I did bring a Dell Laptop home from work a few weeks ago to test the set up. This was a larger laptop but still with Win 7 and that seemed to do the same thing.
I don't really have a problem going and getting a new router if that will solve it, but seems a really strange issue and can't find examples of others with same issue?
Any ideas?
Thanks
Tim

Guess no one knows then, I expect it is old router I will need to replace. Have tried again all evening, basically it just reboots the router as it connects and once the router is up again it is OK - very annoying!0

Cheers, have already disabled IPv6.
I also found a tech thread that suggested switching off UP&P so have done that and I think that may have sorted it, though still seems a little unstable but didn't crash router when I turned it on last.
Not sure if UP&P is anything I need so I'll just have to see if anything else has issues now.
I'll try the Link Layer Topology options as well.
Thanks!0
