Holidays to Goa and Egypt

Hi all. My wife and I are looking for a winter vacation to the sun as we have never had one this time of year before. During a conversation last night a few friends suggested Goa! others Egypt, ( Sharm el Skeik). After looking at the weather reports for those two places I was immediatley impressed. Egypt aint that long of a flight as opposed to Dominica or Goa, but we have never been to any of these places before, can anyone give us some information before I nip to the travel agent.

Kind regards

    Have been to both.

Egypt is a lot easier to simply book and go.

It's difficult to just decide to go to Goa. You need a visa, jabs and malaria tablets. All take time to arrange.

I liked them both, but I went to Goa over 10 years ago and probably wouldn't like it now. Just as friends we went with whofirst went in 1990 but didn't rate it in 2000.

Don't be too quick to rule out the Canary Islands and Madeira as options. They are nice and warm (20 to 25 most days) and a bit easier to potter around and look at than both Egypt and Goa.
  • Thank you for the rsponses. Interesting to hear that injections and tablets are required for Goa. Canaries, a possibility but I hear very expensive whilst the euro is at a high. We would like to go all inclusive, maybe for a week, maybe two, we don`t know at this point. Egypt would be nice but being a historian I would like to see the Pyramids, too far to travel in a day I believe?. I shall take the time and look at Canaries and see what offers are available.

    Kind regards

You can do day excursions from both the Red Sea and Luxor areas of Egypt by flying. It's not worth doing it by other means.

Agree on the Euro though although we found Madeira to be very cheap even with the poor rate as prices are quite low compared to the rest of Europe.

Daveyjp is right about the requirements for Goa, but I'd not necessarily let that deter you.

    Take a look at:
    http://www.tripadvisor.com/
    http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/

Both have very active and helpful Goa forums.

I'd personally never go All Inclusive to Goa as it's so cheap to eat out.
And I'd not go to Goa just for a week - but some people do.

If you're interested in ancient sites, have you considered a Nile Cruise?
Usually from Luxor, up to Aswan and back so you'd not see the Pyramids, but I found the temples along the Nile stunning.
Nile cruises usually last for a week, you could then have a further week in Luxor, there's more temples that you can do in a daytrip as well as the temples of Karnak and Luxor (which are usually included as part of a Nile cruise but we re-visited them).

You could also fly up to Cairo to see the sights, we actually did the overnight train trip.
  • I have just spent the week between Boxing Day and January in Sharm El Sheikh. It was ideal. Not too far to fly for just a week. The weather was perfect and the snorkelling stunning. You can go on lots of trips from there but the ancient sites such as pyramids and Luxor are quite a long way. It's best to fly to them. I recommend All Inclusive.

Goa is a very long way for a week. If you haven't been before it takes you three or four days to get your head around the place!

if you want to go to egypt then go - its unforgettable. I went for 3 days last year and yes we were driven round and it was a bit like being on a conveyor belt, but totally worth it. I just did Cairo - pyramids, mosque and all sorts. My next idea is Sharm so I can do the Valley of the Kings.

    Enjoy xx
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

    Hi,
I have been to quite a few places by now (apart from summer holiday places Egypt, Gambia and Goa in winter, this year Dominican Republic - leaving in 2 weeks time yey!!).

My own opinion - if you can afford the time off and the money, go for Goa. Yes you need a jab, anti malaria and Visa but none of that is difficult to get.

Currently I like going long haul while I am childless and can and I have to tell you that I looooved Goa! Want to go again, but this year can only afford a week off.
