River island jeans

Options
Hi everyone, just wanted some advice on my rights to a refund or credit note?

I Brought a pair of jeans in the sale from River Island about 3 days ago. When I tried them on in the changing room they were fine, no fault.

When I got home and tried them on to wear out, the button on the front of the jeans is broken, Its made of small gems and metal. looks like some of the gems have fallen out and the metal has bent back. It is very sharp and has cut one of my fingers.

I obviously do not think they are fit for purpose! What are my chances of refund on them?

Any advice is much appreciated, I have never returned anything faulty
:) Been lucky

    Hi
Do they still have the tickets on and do you have your receipt

If so return them ASAP they are faulty push for a refund loudly if need be
They may try to state you should have seen the fault as you had opportunity to notice the deffect in store

If however you haven taken the ticket off you may have more trouble
Could you sew a new button on or is it a press stud type ?

Being in the sale does not affect your stat rights by the way

    Good luck

  • Tickets are off, I know stupid! Because I had tried them on instore they fitted fine. So as you do.... Remove all tags because they have loads and get in the way.... not realising they may be faulty :(

The button is like a flower gem, not like the normal stud ones. Prob could be changed to a different one. Its annoyed me more because my cut fingers has been hurting for days, I have fallen out with the jeans for this reason!

what do you think are my chances on taking them back?

sorry forgot to say, still have the tags although they are not attached.and also have reciept!

    Always worth a try

    Be polite but firm
If that fails lay on the floor and scream like a toddler LOL (joking)

It makes no difference whether the tags are on or off. You've got them home, tried them on and the button broke. I can't see why you shouldn't get a refund.
  • Yes, there should be no problem getting either an exchange for a new pair or a refund by the method you paid for them. Remember to take the receipt with you.

They may argue that the deffect should have been noticed at the time of purchase as I said

If faulty you can get replacement or refund if no replacement available providing you advise retailer within reasonably timescale - 3 days I would assume is reasonable so you should be fine.

When are you not entitled to anything?
If the fault was obvious and it would have been reasonable to have
noticed it on examination before buying.
Shops often use this clause especially if the labels are removed as it may have been worn and the damage caused then
You say yourself it was ok in the shop are you sure if it was delicate that it was not damaged in transit home ?

  • I think its worth a try. I had a similar problem with a pair of full price RI jeans. They had black gems down the sides and two buckles on either side. I wore them and after washing 3 times I noticed after wearing them my hands and arms were scratched, holes in my tops where the bottom had got caught - couldn't sit down on my leather suite for fear it would get damaged from scratches. I doubt the problem with your jeans was an isolated one - the stones in mine had bent out of the metal encasing them, they hadn't been stitched on correctly so were hanging off and also changed colour, the buckles bent. This was after washing instructions followed and item was washed in a delicates bag. I'm a dancer so I have alot of experience in knowing how to wash costumes with Rhinestones, Sequins etc on and can honestly say RI appeared to have a manufacturing problem with the jeans. I payed full price for them and have avoided RI since as the quality has gone down alot in their tops and things too which is a shame. I liked RI alot, their jeans were always a good fit for me and I have trouble getting jeans as I am petite. Take the jeans in and explain what happened - you might not have been the first person to complain with the same problem!

There won't be any issue at all in getting a refund / replacement.
