Break clause question

My partner and I are currently renting (in the slow process of buying) and gave notice in writing to our landlord 2 months ago. We are in a 12 month contract with a 6 month break clause and intially thought we were going to have move out on 1st February when the 6 months is up.
Our landlord however, has been really good and said that we can stay on until we complete on our house (which will March at the earliest) and just give him as much notice as possible. We haven't signed any contract though and nothing is in writing, apart from our original notice. Should we have a new contract?
Thanks

No. A new contract will mean a new fixed term, the shortest AST being 6 months.
Sounds like you've got a good landlord so just roll with it and do as he says by offering as much notice as you can and be helpful with viewings etc.0 -
Ah thank you for your reply. I'm just a bit worried about what our rights are - as we technically handed in our notice? In the very unlikely situation that our landlord decides that he wants us out, what rights do we have?0

Most landlords rarely "want their tenants out" unless they don't pay the rent or are troublesome. Having reliable rent-paying tenants who look after the property are what most landlords cherish, so I doubt yours will give you notice.
As previously mentioned if your landlord is being so reasonable (and they are) the least you can do is to be extremely flexible about viewings once you've decided on a leaving date so your landlord doesn't have a void period between tenants.
If only all other landlords were quite so decent, this board would be like a ghost-town0
