NetGear Security Key

Can anyone help??? We have misplaced the piece of paper with our Wireless Security Key on :o! We have called NetGear and they have been really unhelpful...telling us that as our warranty has expired we will have to pay £25 to get some technical support for them to set us a new Security Key:mad:.

We have just bought a new laptop and would like to connect it to our home internet but can't without this key....

is there any way of retrieving this without having to go through NetGear??? Thanks in advance!!

yes, reset the router by pushing a ball point pen into the little hole at the back then set up your router as if it was just out of the box. There is no security once you reset so don't forget to secure it.

Also go to netgear website type in your router model and download the installation manual, they are very easy to set up. £25 quid cheeky b**stards!

    https://www.routerlogin.com

    user: admin
    pass: password

click the wireless settings link and the code should be in there. you will need to do this via a computer connected via Ethernet cable

Why would you reset a router that is working perfectly??
  • You should be able to set your Wireless security key from within the admin console on the router.

From a PC that is already connected to the network/router, type in the IP address of the router in an Internet Explorer address field.

If you don't know what the IP address is, then try 192.168.0.1.

If that doesn't work, then you can bring up a command prompt (Start -> Run, then type cmd and click OK). In the black command window, type ipconfig and hit return. This will bring up a list of your network settings. You are looking for the value for "Default Gateway". Put this into the browser address field and hit return.

This should bring you to a login prompt for your router. You should know this password. By default, I think the Netgear has "admin" / "password" for the username / password. But hopefully you changed this.

When you have successfully logged in, you should be able to navigate your way to the Wireless configuration page for the router and from there you can set/change the security key. Please don't use WEP.

If they knew how to configure a router in seconds, they would be able to login to it using an ethernet cable or another pc, and get hold of the wireless password. Resetting the router means they will then have to find the isp username and password.

Suggest OP follows post 3 or 5, using an ethernet cable or a working pc, and look at the wireless screen for the password.

Why not just logon to the router and generate and new security key, then enter the new WPA code into all the relevant machines ?

That way you have the correct key, it's not really necessary anyway unless you don't save the keys.

So rather than logging on to the router and just checking the passphrase you're suggesting resetting the router, then logging in to the router resetting up the SSID and passphrase (plus any other settings that have been lost), then going to each wireless client and setting up Wireless SSIDs and passphrases again?

    mmmmmmmmmmmmm....

    ...strange

OP - just do as gaming_guy suggests in post3 from a PC thats already connected to the router (preferably by ethernet cable)
