Folks I was updating a pc and installed service pack 2 and then installed microsoft's spyware program "windows defender".
Thr pc in question was grinding to a standstill so I uninstalled SP2.
Now, during the uninstall it tells me Windows defender won'tl work anymore.
But I'm after checking and it's still there and it still appears to work under SP1.
Does somebody else want to have a go it at this and tell me if they get the same results?
And shoosh, don't tell microsoft...

I remember years ago when I was doing exams,
The teachers and lecturers kept drilling into me, answer the question you're asked, not the question you want to be asked...0 -
I remember years ago, my mum used to say:
"Don't take the !!!!!! out of someone who tries to help you, or they might not try to help you in future.."
The answer to your question is No. Only a fool would do that. You'll have to wait for one to come along.
P.S. Shame you didn't pay more attention to your English teacher.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
It needs SP2 to run it
System Requirements- Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2

Windows Defender downloaded for me yesterday, all OK, but didn't update. There were instructions to delete the signature file in the registry. Didn't bother, just got rid of it, but noticed later a seperate file in Reg Cleaner marked Windows Defender Signature File.

Defender seemed resource hungry.
Well, it is a Microsoft program.
It also needs some services that I'd disabled because there was no rational reason to need them running and they were potential security holes. The only reason I re-enabled them was because Defender wouldn't run without them, which was rather a pain.0 -
Spyware Blaster gives real time protection.
Defender gives running processes and confirmation that they are legit, but Task Manager will do the same and http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm will tell you what they are.0
