Problems Un-installing Software

I had a program crash today and tried to do a re - install.

The Add/Remove control panel would not let me remove the old one, so I physically deleted it and all its folders.

When I try and install a fresh version, it says the previous installation is detected and it will not install.

How can it be detected if I deleted it,and is there any way around it???

Thanks

You'll have to make sure everything is removed including registry entries.

You might want to run CCleaner or Glarys Utilities or similar to clean up the registry entries
We all evolve - get on with it
  • Which program is it?

There are settings stored in the Windows registry. Editing the registry can be dangerous, as all changes occur immediately and you could cause serious problems if you delete the wrong thing. You can view the registry by running regedit (if running Vista or Windows 7, type regedit in the search area of the start menu. If running XP, go to run on the start menu and type regedit in there).

First backup the registry by going to file, export and then save a file somewhere convenient.

The settings that you need to modify will probably be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. You can probably safely delete any mention of the program under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE, but it may appear in other places too. Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and use edit->find and edit-> find next to find every occurrence of the name of your program. Please list here the name of the locations where it appears and I should be able to tell you whether it is safe to delete or not.
