When does the housing market start picking up in the new year?

Hello,

I was just wondering how soon into the new year people start putting their houses on the market? We've been looking since October and obviously there's a real lull in December, but does the market usually start picking up in January, or is it later on in the year?

Thanks

  • Busiest in spring. But Feb can be fairly busy, as people try to beat the rush.

Given the current climate, do you think 2010 will follow the same trends as previous years....?
  • Thanks, looks like we might have a bit more of a wait then!
  • I think it will pick up in the new year, by me a lot of houses went sstc in december, and i m sure people are just waiting for new properties to come on the market, a friend of mine put his house on the market end of december and hes had 2 viewings and 2 offers already and that was this week.

He previously had his house on the market from 2007 till 2008 and he had no viewers at all, we was the same we had ours on the market from 2007 till early 2009 and we had hardly any viewers.

I just hope you have more luck than what we did when we tried to sell, and from what ive heard and seen things do look like they are getting better.

Prices may well fall when the rates of interest rise - they can ONLY go up from here.

We've just had an offer on our house and have been looking round for something that we want to buy. A lot of houses have gone on the market in this area over the past week or so. Seems to be new year, new start for a lot of people.

    We're in Wirral.

As soon as the snow melts and people feel like going viewing houses.
Oh and as soon as they can afford to buy without shackling themself to a lifetime of insane debt.

Properties will flood the market when interest rates rise - probably shortly after the General Election as Labour are currently keeping them low in an attempting to orchestrate a mini-boom

We're looking in London and have seen quite a few new properties come on the market in the past week, after the December lull. I think these are people who were ready to sell (EA instructed, HIP bought etc) before Christmas but didn't want to go on the market at such a quiet time.

Those who have decided to sell over the Christmas break will probably not get onto the market until Feb/March what with getting valuations, buying a HIP, instructing EAs, decluttering before the photos are taken, etc.
