help guys, I have a 100 year old 18k and platinum diamond solitare ring i want to get rid of (an engagement ring off an ex). Now I was thinking ebay, as its only a size J so weighs nothing, and Im assuming as jewellers go by weight ill get about 50p for it? what do you think?

Whitewillow - I'm no expert, but this sounds like it needs to be properly valued - not just for scrap? Ebay may not be the best bet - you need a good jeweller to give it a look over perhaps? It sounds like it may have an intrinsic worth in excess of any scrap value.

    Mambury beat me to it!

I think I'd rather sell it to a jewellery or antique shop than risk posting something like that. Perhaps try 3 or 4 different jewellers for a quote. They'll only quote you scrap value if they think its not worth selling but I would have thought that a solitaire diamond would sell easily?
  • thanks guys, i thought they would laugh at me cos its always done on weight (i was told). I was there when it was bought, and know we paid a fair few hundred for it but i just figured that the market wasnt there anymore, especially as id had it made so small to fit! I shall have to visit a few jewellers and find out, also have a solid gold hand made (in ireland) claddagh ring too, so i may take that along aswell.

    White willow.
my friends mum had lot of gold and some platinum jewellery. She took the gold to the guy in our market who is very trustworthy and pays more that the online ones.
He was very clear that he could only give her meltdown value but she got a better amount than elsewhere.
However he told her that she should save or sell her platinum as it would be much more valuable than he could give her for melt down.

Does anyone know if you use something like webs or moonfruit for setting up a free website can you then set up another one free if you want to set up another.
Want to have a play with one to see if it would be suitable for what we want for nephews dog walking business.
I would have a play with it at home with me as user then we would set real one up in his name so he could edit etc.
But then I might want one in the near future and would already have one but prob not with a relevant domain name.
:T if you managed to folllow or make sense of that.
    Thanks
    Jo
