Why can't you freeze a "roast-in-the-bag" chicken?

Last week we did a monthly shop at Tesco and bought 4 roast in the bag chickens and put 3 in the freezer. However having got one of them out, it says on the bag that it's not suitable for freezing. Doh!

Does anyone have any idea why it might not be when their other chickens can be frozen quite happily (it's not been cooked or anything).

Thanks in advance - here's hoping we've not just wasted £14!

Chris :)

Possibly it has been frozen previously and thawed . Therefore not suitable for freezing .or one of the ingrediants has been

  • Thanks - would you recommend chucking these ones we've frozen out then or just cook them for an extra half hour or so?

Or could it be because the bags themselves aren't suitable for freezing? Some bags and cling films just break up after freezing and the roast-bags are a different texture aren't they?
  • I did the exact same thing - I think its either to do with the bag, or whatever its basted in - they certainly haven't been previously frozen so they should be ok, but mine is still sat in the freezer - too scared to eat it - maybe when the money runs out we will have to !!

    Mortgage-free Glee!
I can't see why this would be a problem. I can only suggest it is the packaging - rather than the product that is the problem, but if it hasn't been frozen long term, I would defrost it and ensure it is thoroughly heated through before using it.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

a lot of products say that but i've yet to have any problems myself

packets of kippers always say that but i used to freeze them all the time as they were always on clearance, might have been the butter pats on top of them but butter can be frozen so not sure but it never did me harm

if they aren't even cooked then i wouldn't worry about it, but if you feel better leave them in the freezer for at least 2 weeks before eating, i've read, on several occassions that most bugs can be killed if they are frozen for at least 2 weeks then the food is cooked til it is piping hot, obviously use your sense and if it smells funny when thawed out then don't eat it but honestly i am not sure what their issue is, i wouldnt' give it a second thougth myself and i nearly died from salmonella poisoning (chinese restaurant food) so i'm very very careful with food handling these days ;)

I have successfully frozen left-overs from Tesco roast to go chickens....and I'm still here! I guess it is probably the bag...I bagged my left-overs up into freezer bags.
  • Thanks everyone :) We will save it for a dinner the kids aren't going to eat and then cook it till, urr, the cows come home (or something!).

    Thanks again!

Why not give Tesco CS a ring tomorrow and ask them . If it is just the bag, I would remove it an cook the chicken as normal .

As long as the chicken hasn't been frozen before I really don't think you'd have a problem. Or what about cooking in the slow cooker, so it's cooked long and slow.
  • I just done the same thing bought two roast in bag chicken (reduced) only to find once home that they're not s'posed to freeze but I'm going to anyhow and will let you know in about a month (if i never reply /update this thread !!!128562;you can assume the worst !!!129298;!!!9760;!!!65039;!!!128519;!!!128544;)
