Lexmark 3 years warranty - conditional!!

Hi,
Can anyone advise, please?
I purchased a Lexmark printer and on the box and the printer it clearly states that the item has a "3-Year GUARANTEE".
However, when I go online to register the item (apparently a condition of obtaining the 3 year guarantee!) it insists I give my personal informaton and that Lexmark is free to use this information as they deem fit (within reason) else I cannot register the item for the "3-Year GUARANTEE".
AM I not correct in believing that if an item is advertised as having a 3 year guarantee and the statement is plastered over the item and packaging then this automatically gives the purchaser the entitlement without the need for registering the item?
This was the case a few years back when I was in the appliance industry but not sure whether the rules have changed or never applied to items other than Brown & White goods.
Cheers.

Does it state 3 year guarantee or 12 month guarantee extended to 3 years when you register (terms and conditions apply)? If it is the second one then they can set whatever conditions they choose.0

Quite clearly states 3 year guarantee with the usual tiny written proviso that the guarantee is limited, which I expect as this will relate to the actual cover offered.0 -

Thanks for the quotes, CHR15.

YesNo "
is the one that leads me to believe that they will not honour the 3 years as it quite clearly says the registration data will NOT be sent to Lexmark. Or am I misunderstanding the meaning?0
