Laptop battery life

I plug my laptop into the mains whenever I use it, with the battery in the laptop, I think this shortens the life of the battery?
Is it harming the laptop in any other way than shortening battery life?

The laptop is too big and heavy to be easily portable so battery life doesn't matter. I leave the battery in incase there is a power cut or something.

No this wont cause any problems, if you want to prolong the life of your battery you should full discharge and re-charge once a month ish.

If you do decide to remove the battery, you should run it down to around 40% charge before storage.

Also batteries have an approx 1000 time charge life.
