You don't need to disconnect, battery chargers are regulated to the correct voltage and most chargers will reduce the charging current to almost zero as the battery becomes fully charged.

How long does a car battery usually last before it needs replacing?

if you have a peice of string i suppose you could use this to measure how long a battery should last.

some folk have batteries that last 10 years, other 5 some 3, some even 6 months is good. it all depends on what kind of work the battery is doing and how good it was in the first place.

    Agreed, no need to disconnect.

it depends on the charger - alot of modern chargers will allow you to charge the battery while it is still connected - If its an older unsealed battery then you may need to removed the covers to avoid gas build up - but these are pretty rare now - most are sealed, which means they also need a sealed battery charger (again - most that are for sale now will be for sealed batteries).
Unless you have really sensitive electronic equipment on your car then I dont think you will have to disconnect the battery to charge it.
99% of the batterys that my local independant car shop sells are not sealed.

Very good I would say, most only last about 4/5 years.

That is a bit of a " how long is a piece of string " question.;)

My Daughter has a year 2000 Mazda 323, she has just replaced the original battery.

great minds and all that! :rotfl:

agree with inactive thats a good life for a battery. mine is 6 years old, it sounded a little slow the other day but this cold weather does affect them. im expecting to be replacing mine this year ( i said that last year though).

why dont you just jump start the car? Drive it for a bit and the battery will charge. Its cold at the moment so batteries get drained faster if the car has been sitting around.
