What about old c/card statements or bank statements - Do they show up the jewellery you bought - you said the receipts were in the purse?
Really pursue this as my bag was stolen and I got the money back for everything in it, including my mobile(gasp - I thought you needed special insurance for that!!!lol). They didn't ask for any receipts, just detailed descriptions and I got everything bar the £50 excess.
Mind you I was insured with Hiscox so maybe that's the difference?Noli nothis permittere te terere

Still no further forwards with travel insurance.
They are claiming that they require recipts for everything.
2 Months have passed and i doubt they have really looked at the claim.0 -
Have you got any other proof of ownership?
If you have exhausted all the lines suggested above then get confirmation that they are unwilling to pay and then write to the ombudsman. You have nothing to lose and they have a few hundred pounds fee to pay. If anything it may make you feel better!0 -
ArchieB, gavin_fran and elisebutt65 I believe, are spot on. Though it is your responsibility to prove the loss, insurers should be reasonable and pay out unless fraud is suspected. You can't be expected to kwwp receipts for everything. What do they think you were using to carry your belongings - stuffing it down your pants? Balancing them on a large pair of ..ahem. Your insurers are being silly. Write a formal letter of complaint to your insurer (recorded delivery) and state that you WILL go to the ombudsman if they do not pay out. Once they write back (presumably stating the same stance), go to the ombudsman. I don't know what the outcome will be, but I doubt they will be sympathetic to the insurers. And you will at least have a bit of pleasure that the insurers have to pay the ombudsman - which will probably be the same amount as paying you your claim. They may pay you just to get rid of you. Then I would get rid of them.Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!0

A Little update.
I have been sending letters back in forth.
They are still claiming they want receipts for everything , which i cant provide. I have sent them photographs with my girlfriend and some of the stolen item in the photo but they are saying that doesn’t prove value.
I cant prove the digital camera because it was her dad that bought her that who she never sees , very unlikely that he would give her his bank statement from a 2 years ago.
I don’t think they are agreeing on anything at the moment.
Every letter they send they are requesting somethin diffrent.
What a waste of stamps.0 -
It is a tough situation, but not necessarily hopeless. i believe that the insurers are being unfair.
there is a necessity for insurers to request proof of purchase / value etc for prevention of fraud. However, insurance has moved on (except, it seems, with travel insurance), so that the onus is now moving to the insurer to prove that a claim is fraudulent.
Many times with contents claims (home and motor related) I have simply asked for some evidence of ownership and paid out unless I suspected fraud. But I am not a travel insurance expert, so I do not know the game with them. It seems that they are having a good time of it.
One thing that comes to my mind is this "proof of value" business. Is it a new for old policy? If so, then the value counts for didly squat so long as you are not underinsured - you have obviously demonstrated ownership or a knack for going out of your way to get a few quid with maximum effort.
Many will disagree with me, but I would suggest putting in a formal complaint, and if no reasoned response comes back (and that includes the stadandard "that's what the policy says so tough") then I woud consider taking the matter further - but you would have to have good reason to change the situation to your favour.
Ask for a full and reasoned explanation. then make a complaint if needed, then go to the FSA if still not satisfied - but be aware that an answer you don't like is not the same as being a wrong answer.Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!0 -
My daughter had a valid claim last year when she was in Brazil but Insure & Go wriggled out of the claim:mad:0

Hi there The Shadow,
I am so sorry to hear what has happened to you. The same thing happened to us in Spain on the first day of our holiday so we had all our money, mobile phone, passports, specs, etc etc in our bags and we were insured with Simple insurance. They asked us for reciepts for everything, a few of which we had but after the £50 excess all we got back was £1.50 for £1000 worth of stuff and £500 in cash. So I can sym0pathise with you.:smileyheaMagenta0 -
Well I'm about to fiond out how good Hiscox are (Contents) as I don't use travel insureance for personal possessions as my contents gives me £1000 worjt of cover. Iberai appear - 1 week on now - to have lost one of my bags, which happened to have a couple of my Missoni tops (aaaaaaargh!!!)
They don't even know what country it's in when I call them.
So I rang Hiscox and they've said they'll deal with the claim after 21 days - just ring up and give them a list of items and replacement values - they don't want receipts or anythingExcellent company and well worth paying a little bit more than usual!!! Sometime money saving doesn't save money IYKWIM??
