If you can, soak clothes overnight if they are stained. I do this with my son's work shirts and its amazing how all the grime comes out. I know you cant use biological op. Have you tried putting the clothes on, letting the machine fill and then switch off for an hour so they get a good soak. Might be worth trying?Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I only ever use non-biologicals (I have stupidly sensitive skin that dislikes modified enzymes). Find clothes are much cleaner if washed on 40C and half soda crystals.0

I have been trying Costco's own brand for the last couple of months. I bought it on my last trip to cc as my eye was drawn to the fact that it only works out at (from memory) iabout 2.6p per wash! I thought it was worth a try. I have been really pleased with the results. I have never been disappointed with any of their 'own brand' products.0

I found once I moved from using tablets to big box powder my cost per wash came waaay down. I live in a soft water area so don't need the dose recommended on the back of the box or two tablets or whatever. Once I worked out (by trial and error) that I needed about 1/3rd of the recommended dose I found a small yoghurt pot that gave me this amount exactly and now use it instead of the scoop.
If I have something particularly filthy to wash, like rugby kit, I use a tiny scoop of washing soda. Sometimes I do need to use some bio enzymes so add a scoop of whatever the stuff is called...bio-tex? It's a cheapo supermarket one anyway.Val.0 -
tesco's non bio washing liquid is pretty good, and at around £2.80 a bottle is quite reasonable, I only use a capful per wash so it goes a long way .I object to paying for Persil, good as it is, as you are mainly paying for the advertising.0

We use persil non-bio and vanish oxy-clean powder stuff, seems to get everything out, the oxy is good in my experience, could probably work just as well with cheaper tablets (most affect mine and dad's excema hence us having persil).0

I wouldn't buy anything branded...I heard Sainsbury's value brand auto liquid was well reviewed by the last Which report. I use Morrison's non bio powder with a bit of soda crystal and find I can use much less powder than it says on the tin. I also use morrison's bio auto liquid for school shirts occasionally. Less detergent seems to irritate skin less as well.0

Wilkinson's do a reasonably priced non-bio.
I actually use the liquid stuff, but only use a small amount, like 1/2 a capful.
Maybe OP it may be worth buying a product to clean your machine, I have to do this with mine, as we have very hard water and sometimes the washing comes out with marks on them from the machine itself.0
