New House. Which Supplier has the Line ?

The circumstances are a family member has moved into a property that has been vacant for a year. The estate agents are closed and the previous occupier is out of contact.
Is there a way in which you can tell who the phone line is with ? Also is their a quick fix for finding the relevant gas, electricity, water providers ?

Well, the water co. will be the relevant regional one-you don't have any choice with water suppliers.

If the line is not connected then its not with anyone. they just need to call the company they want and place a reconnection order.

Have they tried plugging a phone in the socket to see if its dead.

If it needs reconnecting BT,s free connection offer is still available until the 31/1/2010. (18 month Contract)

Thanks for all the information. BT did advise me to tell them to ring 17070 (line test) if they (my relative) could get a dial tone. This confirmed the phone number.
BT seemed to think that the phone line was disconnected /not on their network and would accept £124.99 to connect to the exchange. They would however connect it for free if they (my relative) signed up for telephone broadband and TV.

I will rephrase my with question with more information. If you are not with BT how do you tell who your telephone line is with? What I fear is by making enquiries to individual telecom companies, that they will try and sign my relative up, whatever the present situation is.

You don't need to pay BT anything for reconnection, or sign up for unwanted services. Use the link given in post 5.
