It's a long time since I first started wearing glasses but... if you're wearing glasses for the first time and you're using PC's a lot then you will definately have aches! These arn't problems with your sight - it's the muscles controlling your eyes that are trying to adjust; add on the amount of work you're asking them to do with all the PC work and basically you're working them too hard!

-0.75 and -0.25 is mild shortsightedness and you will make this worse by using PC's - and of course growing old!

In terms of having the glasses made - get a prescription paid for by work but make sure that the optician writes on the PD (pupillary distance - they are legally obliged to) and then some of the cheapo imports as mentioned above. There are loads of threads here on MSE about getting glasses at very low cost.

And lastly... welcome to MSE

I was really interested to read the comments about Specsavers. In my experience - avoid them at all costs!!
My 14 year old son has had to wear glasses for reading, tv etc for a number of years. He went for a new eye test a few months ago and the optician at Specsavers said that because he had now developed a prism he would have to have 2 different pairs, 1 to wear all the time and another for close-up work. He couldn't get on with them so i took him back. The optician said it was just a case of getting use to them over time.
The upshot is, i took him to another, independent, opticians who after a thorough eye test said he could see no evidence of a prism and he does not need to wear glasses all the time!!! He got on with his new glasses from day one.
    AVOID SPECSAVERS!!!!!!!!
  • I have dealt with Specsavers for years and so have other members of my family, we have always found them to be really good and give excellent customer service. If the OP goes back and explains whats wrong I'm certain they will sort the problem out. I would recommend them to anyone.

There is evey chance that they have been fitted incorrectly, especially if you have slight astigmatism. Is there a cyl reading in your prescription. Just a few degrees out can give you headaches. I should know it happened to me once and the optician is obligated to make the correction free

I have astigmatism and got my eyes checked from Vision Express a week ago and in the AXIS column my right eye is 5.0 and left is 180.0. I am pretty sure on my old prescription both AXIS's were 180, should there be this much of a difference or is it normal?
  • Several years ago I had 2 pairs of glasses made up at Specsavers - one pair were tinted. The tinted pair seemed fine , but the normal ones not. I was told to just 'get used to them'. I walked around town for 20 minutes with the ground throwing itself up at me, culminating in my falling over, so I went back to the store and demanded that they were checked.

Turns out the lenses had been put in the wrong way round! And all the assistant did was laugh! And tell me to come back in an hour when they would be fixed for me.

Lucky for them (and everyone else near me at the time) I didn't go to my car and drive home straight away!!

The reading you gave are axis', and there is only 5 degrees difference between 5 and 180. It is entirely possible it has changed this amount .

I would like to add that specsavers can only be as good as the optician that works there, If you have had a bad experience dont put it all on their door !

It can be quite common for an optician to find a different reading or result to another as its based on the replies that the patient gives, ie when they say better with one or two. They use the computer readings and then fine tune it depending on these replies.

I have had glasses for nearly 20 years and have had several pairs that needed adjustment, sometimes my brain just couldnt compute the images well enough on an increased prescription and prefered it if I couldnt see as well !!

Opticians are obliged to ensure that you are happy with your vision, it doesnt need you to shout the odds it happens so frequently that they will know how to handle it professionally, so dont hesitate to return. Be aware though standard practice is to check the specs are made to the provided prescription and if it is they may ask you to persevere-just decline and say you have lost confidence and would like a re-test, preferably with a different optician.

let us know what happens !!

If its only 5 degrees I suppose your right but I thought it was a difference of 175.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Hi firstly I know exactly how you feel. When i had my new glasses they were a right pain in the **!*.But they are like most knew things, you will get used to them and the headaches will stop.

My company pay for my eye test and they also pay £40 towards the cost of my glasses(that is the price of a pair of NHS glasses). They say that due to health and saftey laws they have to provide this service to anyone that uses a PC for more than 3 hours a day (work related) or drives a company car.

Maybe you should ask your Manager for a copy of the companies helth and saftey policy.

  • My company provides the cost of an annual site test and £50 every three years towards new glasses or contact lenses.

It should be covered in the Companies health and safety manual.
