One of the good things is that it gets you eating a wider range of veg and learning how to use things - I don't think there is any veg I couldn't use in someway :D

For aubergine, this is lovely topped with cheese:

or else griddled and in stacks with smoked cheese and garlic/cumin etc.

Squashes are very versatile, roasted or fried cubes in pasta/pine nuts or soups etc.

Beetroot can be grated over salads or even used in chocolate cake ;)
I appreciate what you're saying but it's a bit like me offering you advice on eating something you don't like, isn't it. sorry if that seems offish but i think you missed the point of my post entirely.

Good quality ingredients, occasional new stuff and not sourced on price alone - sounds like a winner :)

I don't mean to be rude, but a bit like you seem to have missed the point of a veg box scheme - if you only eat such a tiny limited range of fruit and veg (not that there is anything wrong with that, just the point of a box scheme is you get a wide range of stuff) then it's obviously not a goer for you - and you don't have to have boxes from them, you can just order those few fruit.veg items on their own if you want.

I got the point of your post, you are not suited to box schemes though - they offer a variety of in season veg, if you are going to be picky and want the same set things every week you are better off in a supermarket as the British seasons are not compatible with set vegetables all year round as you probably know seeing you grow your own as well.

I took it as an opportunity to try new things and learn new ways of cooking them, a lot of the taste aspect is in the cooking as I was trying to demonstrate - I bet your kids wouldn't even realise if you'd made the chocolate cake with the beetroot let alone complain about the taste!
  • I might give this firm a check - anyone got any codes/offers & would be so kind as to PM them to me, please? :D

  • I have tried out three box schemes, Riverford, Abel and Cole and a scheme that is local to me in Kent. Of the three I prefered Riverford for the vegetables. I found Abel and Cole's quality to be a bit hit and miss for veg and fruit. We tried Abel and Cole's sausages and found they were too spicy for our liking which was a pity because otherwise they were very good. The venison was good too.

I haven't ordered anything for a while but one advantage of Abel and Cole over Riverford was that if you just wanted a small amount of meat you could add it to your veg order. Riverford had quite a large minimum order value for meat which put it out of my price range. I found that Riverford's fruit and Veg lasted a lot longer than the supermarket veg especially compared to the organic veg.
