Need Car For Job To Escape J.S.A

  • The depots close to me have not been recruiting for a long time. The one that i know that is would take about 40 mins by cycle from here.
In answer to woodbine i do have pcv entitlement and just need to pass a medical and then apply for a new licence. It might cost me £90 for a medical (my own surgery) unless the company do it themselves.
Re Prudent: i did look at rentals and they were quoting silly figures like £100+ per week
Re flea72: 4.45 might be the time i had to set off to reach the depot for the earliest start and after midnight could be when i left for home on a late. Also i am now looking at e bay localy, i have seen a couple of possibles at low prices but without m.o.t's or ones nearly run out so maybe but i will have to keep a look out, nothing obvious as yet.

To make the point here if i had the money to avoid finance i wouldn't be asking the question. I know you don't need one thou but its just a figure. Being on j.s.a means i don't have spare cash to pay out. I have seen a few around £500 give or take and occasionaly one withsay 10 months m.o.t but it still leaves me needing that £500 or whatever. I am not a bike rider and wouldn't know what to do with a moped. As for a push bike at 4.45 in a morning or returning at 15 mins after midnight i don't think so.

If you're going to object to all suggestions then why ask for advice on a public forum?

There's no way to make money appear out of the sky for you; if you can't afford a car you need to consider the alternatives or consider yourself "trapped" as you say.

Long time ago now but I used to cycle to work and back at un-social hours when I used to work 12 hour shifts in a computer datacentre. Clearly I'm still here to talk about it so why "I don't think so"? It would only be until you could afford a car wouldn't it?

Edit: Just seen your comment about the depot being 40 mins away by cycle which you posted while I was writing the comments above. That is a little far, perhaps, but still do-able if you're fit. I would look at a moped under those circumstances. They are not exactly difficult to ride.

It is worth mentioning that once you secure a bus-driving job, there may well be other bus drivers who have cars who may offer car-sharing.

Also, could you not just cycle to where the staff bus starts rather than all the way to the depot?

All in all your priority to to get the job. Travel might be difficult for a short time but you will shortly be in a position to obtain transport of your own.

I must say a push bike seems to be the answer. A 40 minute ride does not seem too bad if you are fairly fit, and will not have all the associated costs of a car or moped. Should only be for a month or 2.

Even if you find a company to lend you the money you would still need to find more funds to insure it - if the car is on a kind of HP/ PCP then the finance company will normally insist on fully comp cover which may be a bit of a shocker on costs.

How about trying to ask on Freecycle for a bike or a moped - or even be cheeky and ask for a car or a van. If you explain your circumstances someone might be able to help.

You could also ask for advice on the transport board of this forum - the guys there may have some other ideas.

    Good luck.........
