I am stuck in a vicious circle. I on on j.s.a and know of some jobs (bus driving for which i am qualified)) but due to the early/late starts need a car to get there. Out of range for a staff bus and only need say £1,000 for a car but i cannot get any loan untill i am working but i need a car to get the work. No family or friends to help so thats out. I tried one company who reckon to help most with car finance but they said i would need to complete a probationery period in work before qualifying which is defeating the object.
Anyone know how i can break out of this trap, the jobs are there but i need a flippin car!!

aim lower - if you cant afford £1k for a car, think about what you can get for what money you do have
tbh, pay £100, if it get you through your first month to pay day, then its done its duty, and you can then think about buying something better - or just keep using it, until it dies

How far are you from work in miles/km's?0 -
You can get a car for less than £1,000.
What about a moped? (For the short term, if you don't like them)I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 20100 -
I wouldn't get a car on finance until you're settled in your new job for at least a couple of months, once you're reasonably confident that the job is secure and you feel confident that you'll be staying there then you'll be in a better position to start a years-long finance deal to buy a car.
The moped/scooter idea is actually a pretty good one - modern scooters are easy to ride with automatic gearboxes that mean you pretty much have to just steer, brake and accelerate, and are also extremely economical. You can ride a 50cc one on a provisional licence and probably pick one up, insure and tax one pretty cheaply.
Or look through the car section of Adtrader or take a look on Autotrader.co.uk for a cheap little runabout to use for a few months - get one that has a recent MOT so that you know it is at least roadworthy and won't need another for the best part of a year.

To make the point here if i had the money to avoid finance i wouldn't be asking the question. I know you don't need one thou but its just a figure. Being on j.s.a means i don't have spare cash to pay out. I have seen a few around £500 give or take and occasionaly one withsay 10 months m.o.t but it still leaves me needing that £500 or whatever. I am not a bike rider and wouldn't know what to do with a moped. As for a push bike at 4.45 in a morning or returning at 15 mins after midnight i don't think so.0

Rent a car until you have a few pay cheques and then get a very cheap run around, upgrading as you can.0

Okay Borderman I understand that it's a difficult predicament but realistically what can people suggest that would suit you? You've had some pretty good responses in my opinion but obviously people are limited in what advice they can offer you - it basically comes down to car/scooter/pushbike when all is said and done.
To be honest assuming the distance to work isn't twenty odd miles is a bike really such a bad idea? You see plenty of people riding to and from work even late at night and early in the morning - make sure you have lights and reflectors on your bike and it may not be too bad once you get into a routine, the roads will be nice and quiet at those times so it'll be safer than riding during the rush hour, plus you'll keep fit! Could be an option for a while till your finances are looking a bit healthier.
Don't know what else to suggest really

try ebay - you should be able to pick up a runner, for about £100
but the moped seems to be the best and cheapest option. it wouldnt take more than an hour to familiarise yourself with the controls, and already holding a driving license, means you have the main thing covered, ie you'd be road savvy
i dont know of any bus drivers who work from 4.45 in the morning, until 12.15, so you wouldnt always be cycling at unsocial hours, if you had a pushbike
tbh, needs must. and if you want a job, then biking to work, or walking is a good starting point - you may well find after a week or two in the job, there is someone you can liftshare with

If you want to train to be a bus driver it usually takes 6 weeks(unless you have a psv licence)these are worked 9-5 so you would have a few pay days to save for a cheap car0 -

I live a few minutes from a bus depot. Several of their drivers use push bikes - I suppose it makes a change from being sat at the wheel all day.Gone ... or have I?0
