I have read a news article in a chinese news paper, in which a guy withdrew some cash from a ATM just outside a bank in ZhuHai last month, later on, when he tried to use those money, he found out most of them are counterfiet!
Nationwide card can be used in ATMs in some modern cities in China (if one bank doesn't work, try another one) BUT make sure not to withdraw a big lump sum of money, say 100RMB to 300RMB at a time, in case the machine produce counterfiet!

One thing about the ATMs in HK, the numbers on the pad are the other way round!
