facing redundancy end of March 2010

Looks like Iam to join many other people who have or are losing their jobs in this current economic situation.
Iam employed by Greater Manchester Police as "staff" and received a letter today stating that my contract will end on 31march, thus making me redundant. My role is part funded by the police and the home office. It seems the home office are not continuing with thir part of the funding and GMP dont look like they are prepared to pay the full cost.

I have never been out of work so the prospect is quite daunting and I just need to start planning whatI need to do to try and get through this the best I can. Relevant info is below and if you need anymore please do not hesitate to ask.

current employment: 4years 8months. Salary: £25,000 per ann
wife works 15hrs a week earning £8,000 per ann
we receive WTC (2 children at home) and I have an industrial injury payment at £26 per week
£400 a month mortgage (6 years left to pay)
we dont have any savings to speak of .... just £2,000 in a ISA
I will receive 7weeks redundancy payment

any help you can offer is much appreciated !

Sorry to hear you are being made redundant, I can't help but was curious how you got an industrial injury payment to be paid weekly, is this for the rest of your working life (ie upto 65) or for a set period and did you decide this rather than a lump sum?
    Always ask ACAS
  • My husband is also facing redundancy totally out of the blue this year. He was told on Thursday his department is closing and redundancies will be from April until Dec 2010.

I am a sahm and we have 2 children. I have been reading the information on these boards and 1 bit of good advice was start now as if you have already been made redundant ie look at where every penny is going. I am good quite at budgeting but will be tightening our belts even more now.

It is a worrying time and I hope you find suitable work.
  • thanks for that Hamsterholly, I will be looking at every penny we spend from today (no lazy Sunday in bed for me)

JDTurk - at present the industrial injury payment will be reviewed in May 2010 when they decide whether Iam still entitled to it or not. My injury is quite serious and was as a result of a "tussle" with a prisoner at work. Ironically I couldnt do the job I was employd to do so was moved to another "non confrontational" position, but my contract remains as it was so Iam in the same boat as the others who were employed at that time.

I just want to add that the union (Unison) have been next to useless over the years and failed to help with a serious issue last year and many of us pulled outr. Probably a big mistake now becuase I/we dont have representation. Does anyone know if there is anywhere else to turn to for help regarding employment rights etc ? I could rejoin the union, but they say they dont represent anyone until they have been members for three months and sadly I wont be employed in three months time ....... its just big headache !

    Check out:

and then work your way through the "employment" posts I have put on a blog of mine to see what applies to you:

I know I've got a link or two on there somewheres to help you work out redundancy pay due for instance.
  • thanks ceridwen, I am browsing your info packedblog over a cuppa now !

Another negative point which I forgot to add in my original post:

Although we are entitled to WTC and should be in receipt of it, we are not as we were apparently over paid by £4000 a few years back and any entitlement we should receive is being used to pay back the "supposed" overpayment. Whether we could get this back when the hammer falls, I will have to ask !

On a brighter note I have followed Hamsterhollys advice and already started to revue finances. I have changd our gas/electricity supplier and saved around £120 a year
