Can i put a wod burning fire in my housse?

Hi,

We are currently looking to put gas in our house to replace our current storage heaters. ith havind radiators e are tempted to do away with the current gas faire as its a self fluing onand quite expensiv eto get a modern one and a buy an electric one that we would just use more for show, or those cold days.

My friend recommended a wood burning one, we live in a dorma house, and have a approv 4-5 meter ga between my house and the next one. with a path running to the garden.

We have a flue that runs out there now so my friend, said it would have to run up above 2 meters, and be guarde I would prob running it right up the house to clear peoples houses if that makes sense.

I just wondered what the restrictions would be ? if anyone new or had any adivce.

Many thanks

    Perhaps someone could translate this.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    ....if that makes sense.

    Sorry, no it doesn't.
  • Ignore the above - apart from the lack of spell checking it made (mostly!) sense to me

I believe you should contact you local council planning department to see if you require planning for putting an external flue up the outside of your house.

To my (limited) knowledge I believe you will have to go above the roof line anyway for safety reasons.

issues to consider (as we are looking at doing similar) are:-

    1. Cost of external flue. Stainless steel is not cheap and the flue will almost certainly be one of your largest costs. You would be looking at twin walled flue pipe like Selkirk or sinilar (google it to get idea of costs)

    2. Cost of wood - unless you have a cheap and plentiful supply of decent seasoned fire wood you may not end up saving eany money if that is why you are doing it. Get a cheap electric or gas fire for ocassional warming of one particular room and use your new gas CH for primary source of heat with TRV's on each rad

    Good luck
