    Thanks for this thread. I have a sweet potato tuber in my potato drawer which is currently sprouting. Ashamed to say that its been in there for a few months - just never got round to trying it. You have all inspired me to try potting up the shoots next month, thank you.

    Hey, I'm just guessing! The truth is that very little of gardening lore has actually been properly and rigorously tested, and we know very little about the extremely complex interactions between plants and their environment. A lot of the things you get told are just old wives' tales, so it isn't stupid to not take them for granted and experiment a bit instead (and lots of fun as long as you don't mind the odd disaster :D).

    So why not have a go and report back? Maybe cut and dry half and measure the results against the uncut ones.
