What's te best buggy for a newborn and 2 year old?

Long post so sorry in advance.

My DS will be 26 months old when new baby is born and i'm wondering which buggy will be best for me to buy.

My DS won't walk well in public. He's the type of child that will want to pick up every speck of dirt he sees on the street and run into every shop he sees so it would be near on impossible for me to get him to walk around town. He also refuses to hold my hand and if reins or a wrist strap are put on him then he will throw himself to the ground and not stop the tantrum until he's had the reins taken off.

I would need to get a tandem as my single buggy barely fits through a lot of shops in town so i would imagine trying to get a side-by-side around town would be impossible. It is also imprtant to me that the buggy has a large shopping basket as i often do a lot of shopping whilst in town so would need somewhere to store it.

I also use public transport and taxis (walk-on's mostly) regularly as i don't drive.

My budget is £350 maximum. The main buggy which i like atm is the graco quattro tour duo but i'm very open to suggestions of other buggies (though i must say i personally wouldn't consider buying a phil and teds).

I'm in your position at the moment. My DD will be 29 months old when Bump arrives. I have a Graco Quatro Tour but only the single one. They are very very good. Very sturdy and hard to break. Is there anyway that you can fix a Buggy board to the back of your current pushchair?

Or even put the new baby in a sling for the first couple of months til DS is older?

I would say check Ebay for the Graco Quatro. I got mine from there and it was brilliant quality. It's nearly 4 years old now by my working out and still good condition. Just a squeaky wheel which I really need to fix.
What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..
  • I Had an Icandy Pear for my two and it was great. Might be worth you trying one out in a shop if you can though to see if you like it. You might be able to get a second hand one for £350 (they are around £550 new!). I know it sounds expensive but I found that they hold their value quite well. When I bought a Graco pushchair for my first daughter I paid £350, only used it for a bout 5 months and then managed to sell it on ebay for £35! So a loss of £315, whereas I bought my Icandy Pear for £500 (I got a 10% discount), used it for 8 months and then sold it for £400 so a loss of just £100.

    Hope that helps.

Could you not just get a buggy board? It seems alot of money to pay out for what will likely be less than a years usage (I cant imagine you'll be pushing him to nursery in a pushchair??). I had a double buggy and hated it. No matter what you buy they are cumbersome, difficult fold down and take up space in your house. I had no choice as my oldest wasnt even walking when baby was born but as soon as I could I got rid of it and got a single with buggy board.

My SIL has a city jogger it is side by side but is quite narrow. Has a big shopping basket and turns on a penny. You can easily push it one handed so it DS wants to walk you'll have a hand free. I must say I have more problems getting round town with my M&P's MPX single than she does with the city jogger

here it is but shop around i found upto £150 price difference when just loking for a photo for you.

I would agree with looking for one on either netmums or ebay because you may find that by the summer you little one willbe a bit older and will want to walk every where

I had the P&T, I imported mine because they were not available in the UK and it was the best buggy ever, myore recently my friend got one and said she wondered why she had not got one before.

I went through a lot of buggies, I was a bit of an addict, but I got this and used it until I could not use it any longer.

Have you tried one? They are so light and easy to manage, the wheels come off with a click so it fits into the smallest spaces because the seat at the back comes off and it is great on rough groud as well as in town as it is just one space wide. Also if you nonly have one child with you that day you only need it as a single. Plus if you do have one child it stores loads of shopping. :)

I used to put my son in the back from 6 weeks padded out and propped up so he could not flop around - that being said my son was very advanced so maybe this makes a difference, was shuffling at 6 weeks and crawling at 3 months so he was probably stronger than most babies, I forget this but maybe others have done the same?

ETA: They never had them when I had mine but if you are worried about your LO touching the wheels you can get clip on and off mudguards now too.

I would persevere with putting the toddler on reins and then use any pram that suits you for the baby.

If you let him have his paddy's but still persist with the reins, he will get used to them - you are in charge, not a 2 year old!

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)
  • Thanks for all your buggy reccomendations. I will definately have a look at reviews for all the buggies mentioned and see if i can pay a visit to a local pram shop to have a trial push of a few double buggies.

  • i would second buying a buggy board as I made the mistake of buying a double buggy that I ended up using 4 times!! I found it too heavy and awkward to get about so ended up buying a buggy board and DS2 seemed to grow up overnight!!

I bought the Mothercare Hoxton and hated it!!

Hi, I'm in a similar situation - my little one will be 18 mths next month when the new baby arrives - I have bought a second hand Jane twin two, which is a sturdy tandem buggy with a big basket. It seemed to turn pretty well and one of the selling points for me is that the front seat is quite roomy for the bigger child - the 3 wheeler Jane twin pram has a much narrower front seat. Hopefully it will be fine for our needs - we do a lot of walking and walk to local supermarket and load up basket of current urban detour 3 wheeler. I got mine out of local paper but these are always on ebay. Good luck!!

    I've been Money Tipped!
My 2 were 22 months apart.

I hated the thought of a double buggy, so went for a buggy board. 1st was in buggy until 25 months old whilst 2nd in sling from birth. 2nd went into buggy at 3months old, 1st onto buggy board.

End goal remember is to get your first walking and at 26 months, they should be more of a walker than a prammer IMO. Buggy board more useful for getting this to happen.
