How to avoid exit fees

I recently switched utility companies for my gas and electric. Initially I spoke to my existing supplier (EON) to see if they could offer me a better deal. There was a cheaper capped package available but it meant fixing and having to pay an exit fee if I wanted to switch earlier.
I asked whether I could switch to an alternative product with EON if prices reduced and be charged and was told that IF I SWITCHED TO A DIFFERENT PACKAGE WITH THE SAME SUPPLIER I WOULD NOT BE CHARGED.
I asked if I would be charged an exit fee if I switched from the EON fixed package to an EON non-fixed package and then switched to a different supplier.
The customer services rep went quiet and said no. He seemed stunned but this appears to be a loop hole.
Now I can't say I've tried it yet but if you plan on switching I think it's worth asking your provider these questions too.

Thank you - I do understand it won't necessarily work with all suppliers but no, I didn't have to pay an exit fee when I switched from EON.0

That is good advice, thank you very much for the info. I am not stuck in such a position, but it is worthwhile remembering for people wanting to switch who are locked in.0

Thank you - it's seems that it worked for me and may not have done if I was on a different tariff. I didn't mean to imply that avoiding fees was a foregone conclusion - merely that it's worth asking to work out the cheapest option if you want to switch. I asked and in my case, was not charged.0
