FWIW I'd be happy to buy the library a new book each year too, but would want it to be something of longterm value...not the latest potboiler. My guess is a scheme,so set up for local ''worthys'' to make a donation of say £20 increments for some recognation (name on a list in the foyer
or even local rag)might bring support from local business owners for example....
If it is somethiing you feel strongly about ask to have a word with the librarian responsible for the reference stock. They may feel under pressure to cut back on expensive books or share them between a greater number of libraries. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I keep saying I'm going to rejoin my library but never get round to it, but I'm going to this month, I've read the whole thread but couldn't find what details I need to take to join?
I have loads of books and can't keep buying more, I need to declutter this year and would gladly donate some books if the library would take them.0 -

If you look on your local council website, probably under 'Leisure' you will find details on how to join your local library. You normally just need proof of your identity/address, so a driving licence, recent bank statement or utility bill or credit card statement would be fine.
Hope this helps.Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.

That would work at my library. People sometimes come unstuck by bringing passports as proof, but we can't use them as they don't have addresses on.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Our local library is great. It's not very big but I've always found plenty to read & a good selection of fiction & non fiction books & they are happy to order anything in they haven't got. The computers are free to use. My DS loved going to wriggle & rhyme there as well as story time, both free. There is a book club that meets monthly & loads of other things go on there as well. We go at least once a week & would be very sad if it was ever closed. The staff are friendly & very helpful. I'm sure it's helped my son develop a real love of books.0

thanks it does, got a driving licence and the usual bills, will go this Saturday but will also check the website.
Checked the website and applied online, will need to take driving licence when I go to collect my card, feel like I've achieved something.0 -
i love using my local library. i don't read story book's, but i enjoy cooking books and crafting book's. My children love going and choosing a whole heap of books ( cause they always find loads they wanna read) and they enjoy collecting the stickers and working towards a certificate.
unfortunatly we have 8 libraries one the isle of wight and due to council cut backs they are closing 6. and stopping the mobile library. such a shame.0 -
I was surprised to find out the range of activities which go on in our library and the number of groups which will be affected by the closures. There is even a books on wheels service which goes round to people who can not get out and would not be able to climb the steps into a mobile library."A thousand candles can be lit from a single candle without shortening the life of that candle."

Thanks Viva for this thread.
I too do a lot of reading & although our village library is not that big I always find something to read & have recently branched out into borrowing craft books which are something I could not afford to buy. This week our library is starting a knit & natter group & as I have recently started knitting again I think I will go & maybe meet some likeminded people.Sometimes not moving backwards is as much an achievement as moving forwards is on other times. It's only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway!0 -
I love reading and have always used libraries since I was little. I love them so much I work in one on a Sunday. Its in a really rough bit of Liverpool (we have security) but it is an essential service for the community. Most people come in to use the computers, we often have quite a queue for them.
For those wondering what ID to take to join, in Liverpool we need proof of address so a bill or similar is good. Passports are no good.
Hopefully we wont lose any libraries with the cuts but the main one for the city is being totally refurbished and is shut for 2 years and one has shut as its going to be part of a health centre.
My daughter loves reading and reserves books herself online (she's 8). I couldnt afford to keep buying her books as kids ones are almost the same price as adults,I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round0
