Asbestos question

I knocked down an old shed in the back garden yesterday and am pretty sure the roof is some kind of asbestos.
I know I can't just throw it into the skip with all the other rubbish but what do I do with it?
Will the council dipose of it if I take it down to the local tip or do I have to call a specialist in and pay a load of money?

ring your council for advice and/or
there may be information on your local council website on asbestos disposal.0 -
You should be able to take it to your local council tip where they'll have a place to dump it.0

Most local council tips don't take them, that would be dangerous. Also our tip has a big notice saying it fines people.
Give your council a call, our council sent us a permit and then we had to wrap up the asbestos and seal it in a bag and take it to a specified site where it goes in a big container.0 -
My local tips has a bin for asbestos. But if I was you I wouldn't be touching the stuff.0

in my area you have to take it to a designated site .. no hassle except its about 10 miles away0

The material used in flat and corrugated sheets was normally made with asbestos cement and are relatively harmless.
Our local tip/ recycle center will take them but want them to double bagged.
Check with your council would be the best bet.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0
