Marks and Spencer VAT change question!

Hello all, just would like your thoughts.
For chrimbo my mum bought me a lovely jumper from M&S, from the 'Limited Edition Collection' After the first wear the neck started to unravell. Now being M&S I was not concerned so took it back. After queueing for an age (they never seem to have enough CS till open!) the girl agreed that the jumper was faulty and asked if I wanted a replacement, which I did but being aware its from that collection I wasn't hopeful. Well I did find the same jumper in the same size. Queued again (sometimes I am far too british) and the girl put it thought the till as a return of a faulty goods/replacement but then asked for 74p as the VAT had gone up since my mum bought it to me returning it. Now if it was a straight forward price increase, I probably would have argued that as a replacement I didn't have to pay any price increase, but as this is VAT, I just paid. Was I right too?
BTW Not going to chase it now, cost me more in petrol to go back!

Thanks! As someone who is usually quite 'switched' on to my rights. Don't know why this didn't set alarm bells ringing! Must have been the shock of my mum buying me something I actually liked!!:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0
