pva glue it is white but dries clear
it works well on timber there are no fumes and is harmless
you can buy small tubs from b&q ect0 -
I just use evostik wood glue which is resin-based i believe and claims to be form a bond stronger than the wood itself. White but dries clear.0

If in doubt look on manufacturers web site or ask their technical people if safe to use with gnawing infants.0

When my OH made the crib for our first he used wood glue, which as others have said dries clear. As it is a crib and intended for small babies there isn't much chance of them gnawing on the bars so don't worry about that.
It's good to hear that someone else out there is making their own crib as I have yet to meet anyone else who has done the same .
Ours is still going strong nearly 11 years later as my SIL has just finishing using it for her first and still looks as good as new.0
