Advice & where to go for.. Life Coaching insurance.

Options
What insurance is needed for Life Coaching?

Do you need "public liability insurance &/or professional indemnity insurance"? And what do they cover?

How much would this about cost and who are the best companies to go for this?

Are they any good life coaching forums that are UK based?

There are plenty of diploma courses, speak to some providers and they should be able to answer your questions if you don't get any other replies here.

BTW have you got a niche for your life coaching? I've met a life coach that helps business startups and another that helps creative writers...just like any other business a unique selling point really helps.
  • Hi,

As a minimum, you will need Professional Indemnity Insurance. If you intend to Coach in person, I would suggest Public Liability Insurance as well in case something gets damaged or someone gets hurt (e.g. tripping over something).

You could try the following for insurance:-

    http://westminster-indemnity.co.uk/index.php

    http://www.towergateprofessionalrisks.co.uk/

    http://www.holisticinsurance.co.uk/therapies/

If you want to go on a forum with other life coaches, then the one that I use is the Fiona Harrold community forum:

There are special parts to this forum where you can ask questions about setting up a practice. This section needs to be applied for seperately.

    I hope this helps.

  • I am sorry to be puerile, but PI cover for life coaching confuses me...

If you had life coaching, and your life/career turned out to be pants, could you mount claim under the PI cover for non - performance?

  • Hi Stephenni1971,

People put claims in for anything they want to. It doesn't mean it's valid and it doesn't mean that they will get a payout. Unfortunately, it can mean that you can incur costs in defending yourself against a legal action. A PI policy would provide some protection against spurious claims.

Thanks you everyone for our suggestions. :T

Paulina_Fortune I will look at what your listed companies have to offer. If you are coaching via phone & email do you need the insurance for Public Liability?

It is likely to have a very big "Non performance" exclusion in it so would not defend any claims for non performance
  • Hi HappySad,

If you only ever intend to coach over the phone or by email, then you could get away without Public Liability insurance. The decision would be yours. You could get quotes to include it and exclude it -it might be that there is little difference in the premium.

Hi Dacouch, Yes you are right - there would be an exclusion against people not getting the desired result. However, if they allege that you have coached them incorrectly -the PI cover could provide some protection against this. It is up to HappySad to decide if they want the cover. It is not compulsory, but it may give them some peace of mind.

  • Hi HappySad,

I have always used Westminster Indeminity (as Paulina recommended above) for my coaching insurance and would recommend them. You have probably already done the research - they offer a joint PL and PI policy at what I think is a reasonable premium. You go through a series of questions to determine how much you pay according to your estimated income from coaching. They also offer the choice to pay monthly, which is quite handy.

I too use the Fiona Harrold forums, although not been on there for ages. There are a bunch of fantastic people on there who are regular posters.

    I hope this helps! :)
