Decorating the Kitchen

Hi all,

The OH and I moved into a (rented) house in November and the landlord has kindly allowed us to decorate the whole house.

We have done most of them apart from the hallways and kitchen and I think it needs to be the kitchen next.

Unfortunately, this one won't get away with just a lick of paint... I need to do something with the cupboards and worktops but I just don't know what!

I got a can of spray paint for the cupboard doors but that just beaded and ran off so I presume there is some kind of coating on the doors that it doesn't like... They are the old 'council' kind of kitchen doors with dark wood effect plastic on them.

I then thought of Fablon but I've read on here it's not a very good finish and is actually quite expensive. So do you have any ideas of how I can update the cupboards without spending an arm and a leg?

For the worktop I thought I would just get a new length and cut it to fit the 3 pieces I need - is it that simple??

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Kevin

    Hi Kev,

Not sure of the actual material on the doors, but if they are paintable, you need to first clean the cupboard doors inside, out and around the edges with sugar soap to remove any trace of grease as can easily develop on the doors being in the kitchen environment.

You also need something like a multi-surface primer. Use a gloss roller to apply primer and paint after priming, using a brush for any mouldings.

The international one I have linked to is very good, but pricey so shop around for different types.

Worktop is very easy to deal with - I don't know if you need to join the pieces - you will probably need to use a contact adhesive or something similiar or buy worktop joiners specially designed for the job to get a good finish. I would score the cuts before sawing through to stop the laminate chipping.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Just re doing our kitchen at the moment , i`ve replaced the doors with gloss cream slab from b&q , i can`t believe how cheap they are, e.g a 500 full height door £17.50, i don`t know how much you want to spend but i think for the time saved messing about priming/painting old doors this i easily the best way.

i`m a joiner and fitted many kitchens where the customer has spent upto £8000 and ours looks no different to there`s

If you do decide to buy new doors, have a look at the t bar handles on ebay there about £1 per handle depending on what lenghts you need ,(there about £6-£8 in b&q.
