Hi all I am looking for a small diesel car for under £500 and someone at work mentioned Newport car auctions for a good place to start, can any one give me any info on the cars there, are they any good???

  • Info like what mate? Auctions like this are a bit of a mixed blessing - yes you can get a bargain but you can also get a complete f**king lemon as well!

People can stick any piece of crap into the auction and sell it on with the buyer having no recourse whatsoever, so if you do decide to buy something make sure you take someone with you who knows what they're doing - someone in the trade like a mechanic or at the very least someone who knows a lot about cars.

You gotta ask yourself why someone would stick their car in an auction when they'll very likely get a low price for it compared to selling it privately - are they getting shot of it cos it has a problem that they don't want to repair? Is something like the clutch on its way out and would likely not be picked up by someone without driving the car over a distance? This is the sort of stuff you need to look out for.

    You tried looking on Autotrader.co.uk?
  • I would recommend the auctions mate for what you want. Take a look at there website.

Dont forget 70% of auction cars are not private. Only around 15% are private cars that people cant be bothered to sell, 15% are seized or have been repossesed by the Finance company and the main bulk of around 70% are part ex cars.

You'll fnd around 50 cars some nights that are from a local motor company like Ford as they have taken them part ex for new cars and let the auctions do all the selling for them as they cant be bothered to have a 'not so nice looking' (didnt wanna say crap) car on there forecort next to all the Brand New Shiny Ford's

I've been in and around the auctions for about 10 years and know people heavily involved on all sides of the business (not just newport auctions)

I bought a cheap run around in September from there - its a V reg (1999) Nissan Almera Advantage 1.4 with 70k on the clock. Just flew through the MOT with a £50 or so charge and havent had any problems - picked that up for £450.

Funnily enough there is a Nissan Almera on there right now with lower miles than mine but in exactly the same colour but much better condition - i reckon that would be around your price bracket mate.

    Hope i've helped
  • Thanks for the help guys, went down last night and I was impressed with some of the prices the newer cars went for, didn't bid/buy anything myself and am still looking. I am viewing a diesel Golf today.

    Thanks again, Paul.
