PayPal Chargeback Fraud urgent help!!!!

I've just had an email from Paypal saying that someone has filed a chargeback and asked their card issuer to reverse a payment made to me and subsequently Paypal has charged me with a fee and now my account is in negative balance. But the trouble is I was NEVER the seller and didn't receive any payment!! I then logged onto my paypal account and it is indeed in negative balance of £8.90 presumably fees from the "buyer"'s credit card company? I am so confused how can someone use my account to sell something? How can I prove this is a fraud??
I have filed a complaint against paypal but received no reponse.
I don't want to be chased by a debt collection agency for something I have no knowledge and never engaged in!
Please provide urgent advice

Mistakes do happen with PayPal (very often!) Go onto the contact page on PayPal and give the customer service a call, after about 5 mins you will transferred to an "Agent" based in Ireland - you should be able (fingers crossed) clear this up.
Let me know how you get on.0 -
It takes me longer than a minute to type a response!
Phone paypal imediately, ask them for advice.
Also check back through history on yoru paypal aas well and make sure original payment not there as they can't reverse something you never got.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Thanks for all the replies!
There's no link in the email and I logged on to the genuin paypal website to log onto my account. I searched history and it shows £50 was being sent by someone called Philip.Gee and thereafter held by paypal. Had absolutely no idea what that person is!! The payment has been charged back today and I don't understand why this money has been sent to my account in the first place?? Two explanations - this person sent it by mistake or somebody accessed my account and sold something to this "Philip.Gee"?? This's so frustrating why should I be punished by something I had no idea about? I'm going to phone PayPal afterwork, by the way do you think they will just ignore the complaint I filed earlier? I had a feeling PayPal might just force me to pay the fee as how could I prove I was never the seller in the first place??0 -
You can't. Very difficult to prove a negative.amber_liss wrote: »...how could I prove I was never the seller in the first place??
But you can ask paypal for proof that, in their view, you owed this Philip guy some money.0 -
I'd also suggest very strongly that you ask on the techie board about a complete clena on your PC. If the original payment was due to a hack on your account due to a virus then goodness knows what else may be lurking.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I may be reading this wrong but are you saying that you received a payment on hold for £50 from philip gee and now there is a chargeback on that? Earlier on you said you didnt receive the paymentamber_liss wrote: »I searched history and it shows £50 was being sent by someone called Philip.Gee and thereafter held by paypal. If thats the case and you received a payment you wont be out of pocket. Though it is strange you received this payment. Look under details of the transaction that should give you more detail
Anyway do some full virus and spyware scans and change all your password and make sure your up to date with any security patches0 -
Thats how I read it. Plus I would say the OP has been charged the £8.50 (ish) fee for fraud chargebacks.0
