i always look for the time left, due to wanting to pick bargains up and it means that theres less chance of being out bid

I will also endeavour to appear like a decent human being!!! (Jacks post)

Just praying I don't get another buyer like the one a few years back that had to be chased for 2 weeks, then sent me an uncashable postal order (made out to my user id, not my name) AND didn't leave any feedback - all for £2....

It helps people to make the decision to buy from a less experienced seller if you seem "Nice". (I think so anyway! :p) I also think you get a more intelligent breed of customer that way, ones who look at more than just the price. Plus they tend to be nicer to you if they believe you are a nice person, which helps if there's ever a problem.

It won't help you with the "I only buy from 100% feedback / never score anybody more than 4 on DSRs / never pay more than 99p for postage rigid types - but I find them less fun to deal with anyway! :D

May all your customers be lovely ones!

P.S. Forgot to say earlier. I am more concerned with the "Item as Described" DSR than any of the others. Whether other people were satisfied with the level of communication doesn't interest me, and I know that people choose Second Class post then mark a seller down on Dispatch Time, and mark down for postage & packing charges when they should have gone with another seller if they objected to what was being charged.

  • It might be worth stating what you said in your first post in a note at the bottom of your listings ie regular buyer but new to selling etc.

Also a nice little note in with your item encouraging feedback might help. If I've sold an item and don't get feedback I sometimes send a message asking why not as to me feedback is a sign that the item was received. Quite often people just say they forgot and then leave feedback. I think that leaving feedback can also depend on the item you're buying. For example I've sometimes bought a CD and it looks fine but I may not play it for a week and only when I have will I leave feedback as I've bought immaculate looking things before only for them not to work.

Feedback is not compulsory and it is inadvisable to ask for it as there are buyers who consider it bad form and may leave a less than positive mark.

That might be true for some buyers but can't say I've ever come across any like that. eBay to an extent relies on feedback otherwise you don't know who you're buying from and unless an item is sent recorded don't know it arrived. I regularly buy and sell on ebay and regularly receive a note/ebay message asking for feedback once an item is received. Personally I see it as good manners to leave feedback.

Best of luck with your selling Big W, if you're selling and posting big value items on eBay be sure to use recorded delivery or other appropriate tracked/insured postal methods as if items get lost Paypal will require tracking details. Hope you items all sell, and for a good price :D

Don't forget you don't have to wait 2 weeks for payment anymore. You can start an NPN as early as 4 days from auction end date.

Like you though I also had a postal order, mine was a US one though so it was doubly useless, made out to my user ID which at the time was something really silly like 'fluffybunny' or some nonsense.

Thanks Soolin, though at this stage the feedback is the important bit. Solved this time by the use of BINs with the immediate payment option required bit....

Now having a happy moment visualising the face of a member of bank or post office staff processing a US postal order made out to "FluffyBunny"... :D

Been lucky so far - 4 items out, 4 positives back in, though obviously can't see the DSRs yet. One of my bits seems to have made the trip from Derby to Caithness quickly enough to keep the buyer smiling - thankyou Royal Mail!!

Hopefully I'm reducing potential buyer displeasure by providing First Class for free! Bizarrely, I now realise I could actually appear suspicious though - saw one of Soolin's recent threads on dodgy fellows building up feedback with selling books at a loss, then going rogue with high value stuff

Understood what you meant by that, but I have seen some of the adverse reactions on this MSE board to such chase-ups. Soolin's response and Cyberbob's link do kinda underline that, so I dare not try such a blunt feedback chase-up.

That said, I did rather like this more subtle feedback prompt I got from a communicative seller in telling me he'd despatched my stuff

"Hello, I posted your item first class recorded delivery today. Please let me know when you get it and all is ok".

Have tried that with my own latest despatch - hopefully this shouldn't annoy even the spikiest of buyers..... :A

Thanks Squirrel. Although not a prolific poster, I am a long-time lurker on these boards, so do know the score with PayPal!!! :money:

For the big stuff I do tend to see eBay as a last resort, but selling through local paper adverts or Gumtree (as I am currently) does carry problems of it's own - usually "buyers" who arrange to meet up but never turn up...
