Hmv

Some people may recall me praising the company previously; I used to work there and I loved it, but yesterday I had a really unpleasant experience at one branch.

I was trying to return some unwanted CDs given as gifts, all with the HMV price stickers on them. I asked for either a gift card or a part exchange (where I'd stump up the cash for the rest of the cost) for an iPod.

The SA was lovely and was going to do it but then decided to ask her manager who was really rude about it. I admit I had no receipts but I am a regular customer and have an HMV Pure card with hundreds of pounds worth of points on it.

Very disappointed; this woman is doing HMV no favours. My own manager was fantastic.

If anyone else was returning them without a receipt they would have been told the same no doubt, so why should it be any different because you have hundreds of points on your HMV card?
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • If the CD's were gifts then technically speaking the original purchaser should return them as they have the contract with HMV not you.

I have exchanged DVDs @ HMV without a receipt. Why not try the branch where you used to work?

I can sort of see where HMV are coming from here. Imagine how many people open their Christmas presents to find a CD, DVD or game they've already got, someone else has already given them or that they simply don't want. If they all took them back to HMV after Christmas they'd probably end up handing back half of their December takings. Even if they offered exchanges I'm sure that would chaos to their stock control, imagine all those piles of Susan Boyle CDs that would be clogging up each store. They're under no obligation to make a refund or exchange an item just because someone doesn't like what they've been given so clearly they've decided a little bit of 'bad will' is a better option for them than allowing thousands of exchanges.

On a related note by daughter was given a DS game by Santa that she already had. It had an Argos label on the back so we popped in an asked if they'd exchange it. Despite not having a receipt there were happy to do so. Result.
