Think also about future-proofing...but unfortunately (just seen your last post) the Iomega one does fall out your price bracket.

I always suggest purchasing one that has both a usb and e-Sata interface - future proofing ;)

e-Sata will provide four/five times the speed (such is the claim but there are caveats here) of usb 2.0. I think it's useful to have for future proofing. Having both interfaces is not necessarily an additional expense either.

Fine example of speed/performance here

Your pc will need to have the e-Sata interface to benefit, but let's say you purchase a new/additional pc later?;)

I know, understand and agree with what you are saying, but £95 is a tad high for the extra transfer speed. (For me anyways)

Where did you get the 1TB from then max..?. I only posted that one as an example. Not sure if the op shops on-line etc. The £50 argos one isn't bad for someone who want's it now and pays cash.

Would be interested in the 1TB for £5 more myself if you provide a link.:D

It was a deal of the day on ebuyer before Christmas, £54.50 delivered. I've also seen some instore at Tesco for about the same, it's just a case of being in the right place at the right time I suppose.

If you really have "millions of photographs", then 1 TB isn't going to be big enough for you. How much disk space do you actually need?

By the way, what's the problem with leaving a hard disk running for a year? Isn't that what happens on servers?

I have no idea! Bit of a techno-phobe so no idea how to check this! Any pointers?

how big is your hard disk, and how much is used? right click drive, then properties.

Keep (at least) 2 copies of everything, don't move it all to an external drive, they fail too.

Yeah but i bet servers are kept in a well ventilate dust free area... as the poster said they just pluged it in and forgot about it :)

The inside of a disk drive is an entirely dust-free area! Constructed in a 'clean room' and thence completely sealed off from the outside world, because even teeny, tiny, dust particles would cause head crashes...
