British Gas - gas meter 181 "Units" - how much is this in real money>?

Hi folks,

I might get bashed for asking a dumb question, I've lived in a new house (3 bed detached house) for around 6 weeks. In this time the gas meter reading has increased by 181 from 68xx to 70xx

Any estimates of how much actual ££ this roughly equates to? We have had the heating on a fair bit during this cold snap, kept it on for 'most' of the time, with temp set between 19 and 21 depending on what we're doing. Have put it down to 18 when we've been out, but that hasn't been that often.

Cheers

It is a measurement of gas used.

It could be in cubic metres or cubic feet.

What does it say on the face of the meter?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    Welcome to the forum.

If it is a new house(new built) it will have a metric meter so you have used approx 2,030kWh which will be around £70. depending on what you pay per kWh.

If it is an older house it could have an Imperial gas meter so this will mean you have used approx 5,740kWh and this will cost around £200

To determine which type of meter you have, look at the front of the meter and if a Metric meter is will have m3(cubic metres).

If Imperial it will have Ft3(cu ft)
  • I think it's cubic feet....yep, says "ft3" on the front of it.
  • £200 !? in 6 weeks. Oh dear. Not really what I wanted to hear.

That seems somewhat excessive, it's not a new house, it's about 20 years old or so, has double glazing but it's a medium sized detached house/3 bed. We have a condenser/combi boiler which is fairly new (maybe 3-5 years old) - i thought it was fairly economical....obviously not.

brown trousers time i guess. (or...get cold time)

I thought I posted to this thread, weird, yeah my estimate of £90 was based on it being metric.

I think your boiler efficiency is not the problem, you need to look at insulation - attic, walls etc.

    Why?

Imperial = cubic feet, Metric = cubic metres

An Imperial gas unit is 100 cubic feet - is that what is confusing you?

181 cubic feet is less than 181 cubic meters!
